It was founded in Austin, Texas by friends Lukas Gilkey (a US Coast Guard veteran) and Lewis Hamer, who first started selling vape juice in 2015 before expanding into the hemp market in 2018. Hometown Hero sells tinctures and edibles like gummies, taffy, and rice krispies in multiple flavors and strengths.

The company gets its name from its support of veterans, with a portion of every order being donated to veteran organizations. The company also played a pivotal role in keeping delta-8 THC legal in Texas to help veterans and others who use intoxicating hemp products for relief.

Hometown Hero CBD focuses on hemp-derived intoxicating products, including delta-8, delta-9, and HHC gummies, tinctures, capsules, flower, and other edibles. There are many flavors and formulas to choose from, as well as bundles with reduced prices. 

Hometown was kind enough to send me almost its entire product line, which is a first. To be honest, it was a bit tough to try everything since my THC tolerance isn’t that high, but I tested every product as best as I could.

Delta-8 THC Products

Delta-8 THC Gummies

Hometown Hero has one of the widest varieties of delta-8 THC gummies on the market. They received 2nd place for the people’s choice award of the 2021 Hemp Cup. You can choose from blueberry, apple, peach, watermelon, grape, and pink lemonade flavors, plus an assorted party pack. There are also high-potency gummies. 

My experience: I ate several flavors of the gummies on different days, usually before bed. All of the flavors were delicious and I felt a bit high afterward with the classic munchies, drowsiness, and happiness. 

Delta-8 THC Tinctures

Although delta-8 tinctures are less popular than gummies, they do offer some advantages — faster and potentially stronger effects. Hometown’s tinctures come in natural, berry, and mint flavors, with the berry winning 2nd place for best delta-8 tincture at the 2021 Hemp Cup.

My experience: I liked the berry flavor the most, taking half a dropper before bed. It worked about as quickly as a CBD tincture — about 15 minutes for the effects to start working before ramping up to feeling more sleepy and euphoric. 

Delta-8 Capsules

If you prefer the convenience of capsules, Hometown is one of the few delta-8 vendors offering the option. They’re made with gelatin and MCT oil.

My experience: I took a capsule before bed. The effects kicked in 40 minutes later and were similar to the gummies. I felt relaxed and chill and had an easier time falling and staying asleep.

Delta-8 Squares

Aside from gummies, Hometown also sells sweet edible rice krispie squares in rainbow and cinna crunch flavors. They’re made with fruit-flavored rice cereal and marshmallow. 

My experience: since these are quite potent I only took a few bites at a time. These edibles taste as good as they look so it’s hard not to eat the whole thing at once. As for the effects, they were similar to the gummies — I felt a high with happy, sleepy, and hungry undertones. 

Delta-8 Roll-On

This is one of the more unique topical products I’ve tried since I’m mostly used to CBD. It combines delta-8 THC with menthol for cooling relief. 

My experience: I used this topical on my knees and other joints after snowboarding and it did seem to provide some relief. It feels nice and cool on the skin without any greasiness or stickiness. 

Delta-8 THC Flower

Hometown also sells delta-8 THC flower, which is essentially hemp flower that’s been sprayed with delta-8 THC. Personally, I’m not a fan of such products because of the potential safety concerns from the thinning agents.

But HH’s flower does have many satisfied customer reviews and it looks like at least the moon rocks are dipped in delta-8 distillate rather than sprayed, which is the safer alternative.

Delta-9 THC Products

Delta-9 Live Rosin Gummies

These unique gummies contain live rosin, a solventless cannabis extract made from fresh hemp flower through heat and pressure. It’s rich in terpenes, often lacking in regular hemp gummies.

Terpenes add both flavor and potential health benefits. The gummies come in 25 mg THC and 5 mg CBD/5 mg THC formulas inspired by different cannabis varieties, including indica/sativa as well as specific strain flavors.

My experience: I took the 25 mg gummies before heading to sleep and felt a potent high that lasted for several hours. I slept deeper with fewer dreams. I liked the 1:1 gummies more, as they still had relaxing effects that helped me sleep but without as much of a buzz.

Antonio experience: I tested the 25 mg and 5/5 mg day & night rosin gummies. Despite being split into “day” and “night” categories based on sativa and indica strains, I found the effects consistent across all four flavors. I took one full gummy, with the 25 mg version having stronger effects.

The effects kicked in within 30-45 minutes and included a strong, physically relaxing and mentally stimulating high. I found myself going on outdoor walks or indoor cleaning. I also felt dry mouth and eyes and got the munchies. But some of the flavors were a bit disappointing, with too much of a hemp extract taste and a weird aftertaste.

Delta-9 Live Rosin Speakeasy Gummies

These live rosin gummies are inspired by Speakeasy cocktails popular during the 1920s, including Apple Pie Moonshine, Classic Mudslide, Tequila Sunrise, and Old Fashioned. They’re free of alcohol.

My experience: I tried several of the flavors, finding them all delicious. They did remind me of the classic cocktails. I felt the effects about 50 minutes later, feeling a bit high, relaxed, and sleepy with cotton mouth. 

Balance 1:1 Gummies

These gummies combine 10 mg of pure CBD with 10 mg of delta-9 THC isolate for a more balanced experience. They come in mango, strawberry, and pineapple flavors. 

Antonio’s experience: Thanks to my higher tolerance, I took two mango gummies on separate occasions with impressive effects. They seem more potent than other hemp gummies I’ve tried, with the effects kicking in 30-45 minutes later.

I felt a wonderful sense of calm and relaxation, along with euphoria, laughter, and an overall elevation in mood, plus the usual THC munchies, dry mouth, and eyes, which lasted for several hours. I liked the mango flavor and the vegan, clean ingredients.

Delta-9 Live Rosin Taffy

If you’re a fan of taffy candy, you might be a fan of these delta-9 infused treats. They come in four flavors of Tutti frutti, Cotton candy, Birthday cake, and caramel, plus an assorted flavor pack. Similar to the gummies, each candy contains live rosin extract rich in terpenes.

My experience: The taffy tasted delicious just like regular taffy candy I’ve had before, with the caramel being a personal favorite. They’re a little hard at first and then get softer. I felt happy and relaxed, with the indica having more sleepy effects as expected.

Other Delta-9 Edibles

Aside from the gummies and taffy, Hometown also sells:

• Dark chocolate peanut butter squares
• Cinna crunch, rainbow, and cocoa squares
• Sour belt candy in three fruit flavors

My experience: I tried the squares, all of which tasted delicious just like the regular version I’m used to eating. Cocoa was my favorite because they also contain CBD and I’m a fan of chocolate. You can’t tell there are any cannabinoids in these until the effects kick in. I felt relaxed, uplifted, and carefree an hour later. 

HHC Gummies

These gummies contain hexahydrocannabinol (HHC), an intoxicating cannabinoid made from CBD. It’s considered about as strong or a bit weaker than delta-8 THC, so the effects are similar. The gummies come in blue razz and strawberry flavors.

My experience: I ate one gummy an hour before planning to sleep, which had a delicious strawberry flavor. The effects kicked 45 minutes after and I felt relaxed, euphoric, and then drowsy, helping me get into bed and fall asleep. Even though HHC is weaker than delta-9 the high was pretty strong because of the high dose. 

CBDa + CBGa Oil

One of the most unique CBD products I’ve seen, this oil combines CBD, cannabigerol (CBG), and their parent molecules CBGa and CBDa at 1:1:1:1 ratios. You get 600 mg of each cannabinoid. 

If you’re looking for something a bit different and closer to natural than regular CBD oil, this tincture is a great option.

My experience: I took one full dropper in the daytime, which tasted hempy and earthy like other full-spectrum CBD oils I’ve tried. I felt relaxed and uplifted after 30 minutes, with the effects lasting for several hours. My only complaint is that the third-party tests don’t show any terpenes.

Amanita Muscaria Gummies

These one-of-a-kind gummies contain Amanita muscaria, a psychotropic mushroom used for centuries by Siberian shamans. They also contain Lion’s mane mushroom, holy basil, and 25 mg of pure CBD. This unique formula is designed to promote creativity and well-being.

Antonio’s experience: I appreciate the straightforward, natural ingredients. However, each 30-calorie gummy does contain 7 grams of added sugar, which I find slightly excessive for my tastes. The elderberry flavor is sweet but with a noticeable aftertaste.

I took a full gummy before working on writing and researching and noticed improved focus, clarity, creativity, and a mild boost in energy. I also noticed some sensory effects reminiscent of microdosing psilocybin, like brighter lights and colors and a sense of peace. Overall, I liked the taste and effects.

Price & Value

The easiest way to compare the value of hemp-derived THC products is to divide the total cost by the amount of THC. For example, if you have 50 THC gummies with 25 mg per piece and they cost $80, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 80/1250 = $0.06. 

You also have to consider that the prices vary by product type. Here’s a breakdown of Hometown Hero CBD’s prices:

Hemp Source and Production Process

I emailed Hometown Hero to learn more about how their products are made. Here’s what I learned:

• The company’s hemp is grown on a small, independent farm located in the Texas Wine Country
• The hemp starts its life indoors in a controlled environment and is then moved outdoors
• It’s cultivated using no-till farming, a sustainable method that protects the soil, with Gulf Coast shells and seaweed being added to enhance soil quality
• No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used
• Hometown Hero is required to test their products once but chooses to test them six times in total: before harvest, after harvest, three more times during the production process, and finally a third-party test
• The company has an in-house chemist who tests each product batch before it’s sent to the third-party lab

Seeing a CBD company put that much care into its manufacturing process is great.

Third-Party Testing

After being tested in-house five times at different stages of the production process, Hometown Hero’s products are comprehensively tested for potency and contaminants by Kaycha Labs and ACS Laboratory, two reputable, independent hemp testing labs. You can find all of the latest test certificate of analysis (CoA) documents on the lab results page. 

Third-Party Test Results

I always look at third-party lab test results to confirm that CBD companies sell safe, accurate, and effective products. Specifically, I check:

• The cannabinoid content, which should be within 10% of the label (3)
• The levels of THC and minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN
• The terpene content (if tested)
• Whether the CBD type (full, broad-spectrum, or isolate) is accurate
• Whether there are any contaminants

I checked the latest CoAs for most of Hometown Hero’s products to make sure they match the label, finding most of the tests to be accurate. But a few tests showed more THC than advertised, like the select spectrum gummies, which had twice as much THC as CBD rather than the advertised 1:1. 

I added two CoA screenshots so you can see for yourself:

1. The regular 25 mg delta-8 THC gummies CoA shows 5 mg of delta-8 per gram; since the gummies are roughly 5 grams each, that seems quite accurate.
2. The 2400 mg CBDa/CBGa tincture test shows 2187 mg of cannabinoids, which is about 9% less — another great result. But the test didn’t detect any terpenes.

The test results are also up-to-date, easy to read, and didn’t find any contaminants. All in all, I’m quite happy with the extent of the testing and the results themselves; they confirm that Hometown Hero is one of the best brands for intoxicating hemp products.

Hometown Hero is the best vendor of delta-8, delta-9, and other intoxicating hemp products I’ve come across. The products are backed by comprehensive, up-to-date third-party test CoAs, which is even more important for intoxicating products vs. regular CBD offerings.

The products are of high quality with a delicious taste and helpful details like child-proof packaging. If it wasn’t for my low THC tolerance, I’d probably go through everything Hometown Hero sent me in a week.

The potency is there too — I felt strong relaxing, uplifting, drowsy, hungry, and other classic THC effects even at relatively low doses, which wasn’t always the case with other vendors I’ve tried. The production process is also impressive, using sustainably grown local Texas hemp that’s been tested many times.
