CBDistillery Overview

Founded in 2016 in Colorado, the heart of America’s CBD industry, CBDistillery is a leading CBD vendor. It has an impressive variety of products, including many different strengths and minor cannabinoid formulas.

CBDistillery oversees every step of the process from seed to sale. A transparent brand, it also holds U.S. Hemp Authority certification and provides detailed third-party test reports and information about its team.

CBDIstillery is unique for conducting product user studies. For example, its 2022 study looked at the effects of its CBD/CBG tincture, with participants reporting that they felt a reduction in mild/temporary anxiety that was more effective than other treatments and activities they tried.

Did you know? CBDistillery rebranded in late 2023 with a fresh look. That’s why the products look different. But the contents and formulas remain the same.

CBD Glossary

  • Hemp: cannabis variety with high CBD and low THC levels (no more than 0.3%).
  • Terpenes: aromatic plant compounds with various beneficial properties (1).
  • Minor cannabinoids: CBN, CBG, CBC, and other beneficial cannabinoids found in smaller amounts in hemp. They may work in synergy with CBD.
  • Full-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract containing multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This form of CBD is about four times more potent than pure CBD (2).
  • Broad-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract similar to full-spectrum CBD, but with THC removed (may contain trace amounts).
  • CBD isolate: pure CBD without any other hemp compounds.

CBDistillery Product Lineup

CBDistillery makes CBD oils, capsules, gummies, topicals, powders, drink mixes, and pet products. Most products contain full-spectrum hemp extract but a few also use broad-spectrum and CBD isolate, so if you need to avoid THC, there’s a product for you.

CBDistillery products I tried out.

To help write this review, I tested the CBDa + CBD oil, CBN + CBD oil, 500 and 2500 mg full-spectrum oils, CBN + CBD gummies, and unwind THC + CBD gummies.

CBD Oils

CBD Oil Tinctures

cbdistillery 2500 mg full-spectrum cbd oil

CBD Potency17-60 mg/ml
Volume30 ml
Total CBD500-5000 mg
Cost per mg CBD$0.05–0.07
TypeFull & broad-spectrum, isolate
Third-Party TestView report

CBDistillery’s oils are available in all three types of CBD extract:

  • Full-spectrum (500-5000 mg)
  • Broad-spectrum (500-2500 mg)
  • Isolate (500-2500 mg)

These straightforward CBD oils are come in natural and mango flavors (only for some of the full-spectrum oils). Third-party tests show about 11% minor cannabinoids in the full-spectrum oils, which is a good result. The 5000 mg version is also one of the strongest CBD oils you can find.

My experience: I bought and tested the company’s 2500 mg full-spectrum CBD oil, taking one full dropper during the day. I felt more chill and calm after about 30 minutes and the effects lasted for a few hours.

cbdistillery sleep synergy tincture

CBD/CBN Potency20-40 mg/ml
Volume30 ml
Total CBD/CBN600-1200 mg
Cost per mg$0.08–0.10
Third-Party TestView report

These full-spectrum tinctures combine a 3:1 ratio of CBD to cannabinol (CBN), a minor cannabinoid touted for its sleep-promoting effects. The third-party tests also show detectable levels of three terpenes, which is great.

My experience: I took three full droppers (60 mg/ml) of the regular strength tincture an hour or so before bed. I felt more relaxed and sleepy than usual and slept with fewer disturbances. CBDitstillery should add another higher strength for these oils, like 60 or 80 mg/ml.

CBDa + CBD Oil

cbdistillery raw synergy tincture

CBD/CBDa Potency33 mg/ml
Volume30 ml
Total CBD/CBDa1000 mg
Cost per mg$0.06
Third-Party TestView report

Raw oils are a special type of formulation where the oil is unprocessed to maintain high amounts of cannabidiolic acid (CBDa) — the parent compound that CBD Is made from through decarboxylation (heating). This particular tincture has a 1:1 ratio of CBDa to CBD.

I’d like to see CBDistillery add a 2000 mg or higher strength; 1000 mg is too low for many people, myself included.

My experience: I took three full droppers of the tincture (~100 mg) during the day and felt calm and relaxed 30 minutes later. The effects lasted for a few hours. The feeling is a bit different from regular CBD tinctures.

CBD/CBG Potency33 mg/ml
Volume30 ml
Total CBD/CBG1000 mg
Cost per mg0.08
Third-Party TestView report

This tincture features a 1:1 ratio of CBD to cannabigerol (CBG), a minor cannabinoid that’s becoming popular. CBG products are typically recommended for daytime use because many people (yours truly included) report feeling more energetic, focused, and uplifted from CBG.

CBD Capsules

CBD Potency30 mg

Total CBD900-1800 mg
Cost per mg CBD$0.06-0.07

Third-Party TestView report

These capsules come in both full-spectrum and broad-spectrum (THC-free) versions. The minor cannabinoid levels for the full-spectrum version are a tad low at ~5%.

CBD Gummies

CBD Gummies

Potency30 mg
Gummy Count30
Total cannabinoids900 mg
Cost per mg$0.07
TypeFull & broad-spectrum
Third-Party TestView report

CBDistillery’s regular gummies are available in full and broad-spectrum versions and different fruit flavors. There’s also a third version with added melatonin (2 mg) for sleep. The third-party certificate of analysis shows 13.5% minor cannabinoids for the full-spectrum gummies, which is a great result.

CBDistillery also claims to include terpenes in these gummies; it would be nice to see third-party terpene potency testing to verify this.

CBD + CBN Gummies

Potency20 mg
Gummy Count30
Total CBD/CBN600 mg
Cost per mg$0.10
Third-Party TestView report

Unlike the regular full-spectrum gummies, these have added cannabinol (CBN), a minor cannabinoid believed to help you sleep. Each vegan gummy has 5 mg of CBN with 15 mg of CBD and is made with mostly organic ingredients.

My experience: I took four gummies an hour before bed alongside a spoon of peanut butter for better absorption. They have a nice berry taste that made me want to finish the whole container right away. I did feel more sleepy and relaxed by the time I was in bed but the effect wasn’t as strong as I had hoped.

CBD + CBG Gummies

Potency30 mg
Gummy Count30
Total cannabinoids900 mg
Cost per mg$0.07
Third-Party TestView report

These orange-flavored gummies take the same approach as the sleep ones but with 15 mg of cannabigerol (CBG) instead.

CBG is another minor cannabinoid that’s believed to have a wide range of beneficial effects and is preferred for daytime use because some people report that it improves energy and focus.

Delta-9 THC + CBD Gummies

cbdistillery unwind THC CBD gummies

Potency30-35 mg
Gummy Count30
Total Cannabinoids900-1050 mg
Cost per mg$0.06-0.07
Third-Party TestView report

These legal THC gummies come in two formulas:

  1. Unwind, with 5 mg of delta-9 THC and 25 mg of CBD
  2. Deep sleep, with 5 mg THC, 25 mg CBD, and 5 mg CBN

Like other CBDistillery gummies, they’re made with vegan, natural ingredients.

My experience: I took one unwind gummy before bed; the taste was delicious and I wanted to have more. The effects kicked in about 50 minutes later; I started feeling sleepy and a little high and headed to bed.

CBD Topicals

cbdistillery cbd balm

CBD Potency14-18 mg/g
Volume1-2.5 oz (28.4-70 g)
Total CBD500-1000 mg
Cost per mg CBD$0.05-0.10
TypeFull-spectrum & isolate
Third-Party TestView report

CBDistillery sells two topical CBD products:

  1. A 500 mg CBD balm with standard skincare ingredients as well as anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving ones, like camphor oil and willow bark extract.
  2. A CBD relief stick with 1000 mg of pure CBD, menthol, and a long list of other soothing ingredients for targeted relief.

CBD Powder

Weight1 gram
Total CBD~1000 mg
Cost per mg$0.03
Third-Party TestView report

CBDistillery also sells ~99% pure CBD isolate powder. This is great for when you want more control over how you take CBD or to make your own preparations like CBD-infused foods or tinctures.

CBD Pet Products

CBD Pet Tincture

CBD Potency5-20 mg/ml
Volume30 ml
Total CBD150-600 mg
Cost per mg CBD$0.06-0.13
Third-Party TestView report

These CBD oils are designed with pets in mind, which is why their strength is relatively low. They’re also made with hemp seed rather than the MCT oil used in regular tinctures. I’d like to see a third strength option for larger dog breeds.

The test reports show 11% minor cannabinoids, a solid result.

Price & Value

The easiest way to compare the value of CBD products is to divide the total cost by the amount of CBD. For example, if you have a 1500 mg CBD oil that costs $100, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 100/1500 = 7 cents. The prices also vary depending on the type of product.

With CBDistillery, you’ll be paying:

  • CBD oil: 5-10 cents per mg of CBD
  • Capsules: 6-12 cents per mg
  • Gummies: 6-10 cents per mg
  • Topicals: 7-10 cents per mg
  • CBD isolate: 3 cents per mg
  • Pet products: 6-13 cents per mg

These prices are a bit below average for their respective categories.

Coupled with CBDistillery being vertically integrated (controls everything from seed to sale), certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority, and offering a subscription option with 30% off + free shipping, I’d say you’re getting pretty good value.

CBDistillery also runs a 30% discount for military, EMTs, veterans, firefighters, and police officers.

Hemp Source and Production Process

CBDistillery controls every step of production, starting with cultivating hemp with organic methods on American farms. It also tests the soil before growing the plants.

The hemp is extracted with one of two main CBD extraction methods: CO2 for full-spectrum products and ethanol for 0% THC products. CBDistillery is also certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority, which means it follows stringent hemp industry guidelines.

This is great, but I’d like to see more details, like the states in which the hemp is grown.

Did you know? CBDistillery is one of few CBD brands to hold the self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status recognized by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Third-Party Testing

CBDistillery’s products are tested by Murray-Brown Laboratories, a relatively new Colorado-based food testing lab. Before that, many of the tests were done by ACS Laboratory, an established hemp/cannabis lab out of Florida.

The tests check for cannabinoid potency and contaminants. You can look up the test results directly on each product page or by entering the batch number that came with your product.

Third-Party Test Results

I always look at third-party lab test results to confirm that CBD companies sell safe, accurate, and effective products. Specifically, I check:

  • The CBD content, which should be within 10% of the label (3)
  • The levels of THC and minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN
  • Terpene content (if tested)
  • Whether the CBD type (full, broad-spectrum, or isolate) is accurate
  • Whether there are any contaminants

I checked the available test certificates of analysis (CoAs) for all CBDistillery products, finding that most showed an accurate amount of CBD and other cannabinoids, as well as the correct type of hemp extract. Full-spectrum products had good levels of minor cannabinoids (above 10%) and some tests also detected terpenes.

I added two CoA screenshots to give an example of the accuracy of CBDistillery products:

  1. The 1000 mg full-spectrum CBD oil CoA shows accurate CBD content (1041 mg, or only 4.1% more) and good levels of minor cannabinoids (14.5%).
  2. The 30 mg CBG + CBD gummies test found 18.3 mg CBD (22% more) and 15.5 mg CBG (10% more), as well as other minor cannabinoids and two terpenes.

Overall, the test results are solid and prove that you’re getting great quality with CBDistillery.

Shipping & Returns

CBDistillery has free shipping on orders above $75. You can also return unopened items for a full refund within 30 days of delivery, and there’s a 60-day money-back guarantee, which means you can return used products for store credit.

Customer Service & Reputation

CBDistillery is one of the most popular and trusted CBD vendors. It has tens of thousands of positive reviews and is quite transparent, revealing the identities of the people running the company.

It also started the #CBDMOVEMENT, an initiative to educate people about CBD, which has had over 400,000 mentions online. You can find dozens of educational resources on CBDistillery’s site. Additionally, CBDistillery donates to charitable organizations, like Project Sanctuary.

The Verdict: Reputable Brand With Effective Products

CBDistillery is one of the most recognizable names in the CBD industry, and for good reason. The company controls the whole production process, has effective products, a good variety of strengths and formulas, and thousands of positive reviews.

All of the products I tested had noticeable effects, and the third-party tests I looked at showed good minor cannabinoid levels.

I only have small suggestions for improvement. I’d appreciate more details about how and where the hemp is grown. Also, third-party terpene potency testing would be nice to see (which was done by the previous third-party lab).
