The Best High-Potency CBD Oil Products — Reviews and Buying Guide

Article by: , last updated September 13, 2020

Overview

Potency is one of the most important factors to consider when buying CBD oil. Most CBD tinctures on the market have a potency ranging between 10 mg and 30 mg per ml, which is considered low-to-medium.

While this is enough for most people, there are many who prefer to use high-strength products due to a chronic health condition or some other reason.

It’s not easy to find a proper high-potency tincture, especially if you want it to be effective and affordable at the same time.

That’s why we researched and compared various brands to find the most potent, affordable, high-quality CBD oils. All of our choices come from reputable companies that post third-party lab test results and have thousands of satisfied customer reviews.

Here are our top picks for the best high-potency CBD oil products currently available and a buying guide to help you choose the right product.

CBD Terminology

  • Hemp: a legal variety of cannabis with low THC levels (0.3% or less).
  • Full-spectrum: A whole-plant extract containing CBD, THC, and all other beneficial hemp cannabinoids and terpenes. This is considered the most effective form of CBD.
  • Broad-spectrum: A whole-plant hemp extract similar to full-spectrum, but with THC removed.
  • CBD isolate: Pure CBD with all other hemp compounds removed.

High-Potency CBD Oil Buying Guide

Interested in buying high-potency CBD products but not sure where to start? We’ve put together this guide to answer the most common questions.

How Does CBD Strength Work?

CBD strength, also known as potency, refers to the concentration of CBD in a product. It’s usually expressed in milligrams (mg) of CBD per milligram (ml) of oil.

For example, a tincture that contains 1000 mg of CBD in a 30 ml bottle has a potency of 1000/30 = 33.33 mg/ml. If you take the same 30 ml bottle but with 2000 mg of CBD, it would have double the potency: 2000/30 = 66.67 mg/ml.

The second option is much stronger, which also means you’d only need to take half the amount to achieve the same dose. You can also apply this principle to other CBD products. For example, potency for capsules is simply the amount of CBD provided per capsule.

CBD potency/strength is a big deal when it comes to CBD oil because it can mean the difference between experiencing relief from your issues and not noticing any effects at all.

What Counts As a High CBD Potency?

Generally speaking, CBD oil concentrations of 40+ mg per ml (or per capsule/gummy) are considered high. Some CBD oil or CBD concentrate products can provide as much as 250–300 mg of CBD per ml.

Why Do People Use High-Potency CBD Oil?

The average CBD user takes 10–40 mg doses of CBD 1-2 times a day. However, this amount may not be enough for everyone.

Whether it’s because you’re suffering from severe symptoms, have a high tolerance to cannabinoids, or simply have an endocannabinoid system that’s less responsive, some people need to take higher doses of CBD to find relief.

In that case, your best bet is to choose a high-potency CBD product. Having said that, your chosen method of administering CBD will also influence its effectiveness.

How You Take CBD Matters

Most people use CBD in the form of oil, but there are many other product options, including capsules, gummies, vape e-liquids, and topicals. Each of these products is absorbed by the body in a different way, which affects their effectiveness.

CBD is best absorbed through the sublingual (under-the-tongue) and inhaled (vaping) routes.

On the other hand, oral products such as capsules,  gummies, and other edibles have notoriously low bioavailability, meaning only a small portion of what you ingest actually reaches the blood and has a beneficial effect (1).

That’s because much of the CBD gets lost in the digestive tract and liver before it can be absorbed.

The Type Of CBD Extract Matters

There’s one other key factor that affects the effectiveness of a CBD oil — the type of CBD it contains. CBD extracts come in three main forms: isolate, full-spectrum, and broad-spectrum CBD.

CBD isolate is pure CBD with all other hemp compounds removed.

Full-spectrum CBD is a whole-plant extract containing all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial natural compounds found in hemp.

All these compounds work together in synergy, making full-spectrum CBD products more effective than those made with pure CBD. Researchers gave this phenomenon the name “entourage effect” (2).

Broad-spectrum CBD is similar to full-spectrum but undergoes an additional step to remove almost all traces of THC.

To illustrate what this means for potency, let’s compare two CBD oils with the same strength of 50 mg/ml. One of these oils contains CBD isolate, while the other is made with full-spectrum CBD.

The full-spectrum version will have stronger effects because it contains additional compounds that not only synergize with CBD but also have benefits of their own.

That’s why it’s important to not only look for a high-potency product but also consider how you’re using it and which type of CBD extract it contains.

How to Select the Right CBD Strength

If you’re looking for high-potency CBD oil, chances are you didn’t find relief from a regular-strength product. If you want to figure out exactly how much CBD you need to take to relieve your symptoms, start with the highest CBD dosage you took previously.

If you don’t notice any effects, gradually increase the dosage over time until you start to notice a difference. Keep in mind that some people may need to take CBD oil for several days or even weeks before they notice a benefit.

How to Choose the Best High-Potency CBD Oil

There are some key factors to keep in mind if you want to find an effective, affordable, high-potency CBD oil or any other CBD product.

Look for Third-Party Tested Brands

Third-party tests are necessary to confirm the safety and potency of CBD products. They’re the only way to protect yourself from low-quality products with little to no CBD.

Performed by an independent lab, these tests check whether a product contains as much CBD as advertised. They can also check for pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

These days, it’s expected for any serious brand to use third-party testing and post the test documents directly on its website. If these test results are not available, that’s a major red flag.

Check the Hemp Source

Since CBD is extracted from hemp, how and where this hemp is grown is also important.

High-quality CBD products are made from organic hemp grown in Colorado, Kentucky, Oregon, or in European countries.

You should only buy from transparent companies that clearly list where and how their hemp is grown on their website. It’s even better if the company grows its hemp directly or uses USDA-certified organic hemp (which is still difficult to find due to regulations).
