Medterra and CBDistillery are some of the most popular and reputable CBD brands on the market. But which one is better? I tested their products for a few weeks to find out.

If price and value are your top concerns, I’d go with Medterra because its prices are about 10-30% lower. Meanwhile, CBDistillery has a slight edge in product variety and reputation.

Here’s a closer look at how the two vendors match up on products, value, third-party testing, and more.

Summary

Although they’re both solid choices, I prefer CBDistillery over Medterra because I felt noticeable effects from all its products, and the company has a better reputation.

Product Efficacy

Products I received and tested from both brands.

For CBDistillery, I tested the full-spectrum CBD oil (500 mg and 2500 mg), raw synergy CBDa oil, sleep synergy CBN oil, and unwind synergy THC gummies. I felt noticeable effects from all the tested products, like relaxation, sleepiness, and calm.

Meanwhile, for Medterra, I tested the 2000 mg citrus broad-spectrum CBD oil, broad-spectrum capsules, good morning capsules, and fast-asleep gummies. They were also quite effective, except for the gummies, which didn’t do much for my sleep.

Overall, both brands’ products had comparable effects at similar dosages. But I’d give a slight edge to CBDistillery because I was disappointed by Medterra’s fast-asleep gummies.

Winner: CBDistillery

CBD Glossary

  • Hemp: cannabis variety with high CBD and low THC levels (no more than 0.3%).
  • Terpenes: aromatic plant compounds with various beneficial properties (1).
  • Minor cannabinoids: CBN, CBG, CBC, and other beneficial cannabinoids found in smaller amounts in hemp. They may work in synergy with CBD.
  • Full-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract containing multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This form of CBD is about four times more potent than pure CBD (2).
  • Broad-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract similar to full-spectrum CBD, but with THC removed (may contain trace amounts).
  • CBD isolate: pure CBD without any other hemp compounds.

In terms of product variety, both CBDistillery and Medterra have many product types, strengths, and formulas to offer. You won’t be disappointed with either brand.

But CBDistillery offers a few more product options, like CBN oil for sleep, CBN and CBG gummies, and CBD isolate, so it gets a slight nod in this category.

Winner: CBDistillery

Price & Value

The easiest way to compare the value of CBD products from Medterra vs. CBDistillery is to divide the total price by the amount of CBD. For example, if you have a 1500 mg CBD oil that costs $100, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 100/1500 = $0.07 or 7 cents. The prices also vary depending on the type of product.

Here’s a comparison of how much you’re paying per mg for the major product categories with CBDistillery compared to Medterra:

Price per mg CBDCBDistilleryMedterra
CBD oil5-10 cents3-7 cents
Capsules6-12 cents4-7 cents
Gummies6-10 cents6-10 cents
Topicals7-10 cents4-6 cents
Pet products6-12 cents6-10 cents

Medterra’s prices are noticeably cheaper, with CBD oil offering particularly large savings. And considering its products were equally effective as CBDistillery (except the sleep gummies), Medterra is the clear winner for value. You get more bang for your back.

Hemp Source & Production Process

In terms of the production process, Medterra and CBDistillery are quite similar. Both brands use American-grown hemp and explain the extraction process.

Additionally, both Medterra and CBDistillery are certified by the US Hemp Authority, a third-party audit program that certifies companies that follow hemp industry best practices.

However, CBDistillery is vertically integrated, which means it oversees every step of the production process, from growing the hemp to extracting it and making the final products. On the other hand, Medterra doesn’t make it clear whether it controls the entire operation.

CBDistillery’s full-spectrum and CBD isolate extracts also hold Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status under FDA guidelines, meaning they were proven safe with scientific evidence.

So I’d give a small edge to CBDistillery here.

Winner: CBDistillery

Third-Party Testing

Both Medterra and CBDistillery have their products comprehensively tested by reputable labs for potency and contaminants and make it easy to see the test results.

Some products are also tested for terpene potency, which is great because terpenes play an important role in the benefits of full-spectrum CBD.

I looked at the test reports for most products to check for accuracy and levels of minor cannabinoids. Both companies do a great job here since most third-party results show accurate CBD levels (within 10% of the label) and large amounts (10+%) of minor cannabinoids for full-spectrum products.

Having said that, I give a slight edge to Medterra because its full and broad-spectrum oils and capsules contain higher levels of minor cannabinoids than CBDistillery: ~20% and ~10%, respectively.

Winner: Medterra

Reputation

Reputation-wise, both CBDistillery (founded in 2016) and Medterra (founded in 2017) are trustworthy, popular brands backed by tens of thousands of positive reviews.

But I like that CBDistillery reveals the names and faces of the people behind the company and played an important role in CBD awareness with its #CBDMOVEMENT campaign. Besides, Medterra has some customer complaints against it.

Overall, CBDistillery seems the more reputable option.

The Verdict: CBDistillery Gets the Nod Unless Money is Your Top Concern

Overall, I’d rate CBDistillery as slightly better than Medterra. I found all of its products effective and like the wider variety of options. I’m also a fan of the company’s transparency.

That said, if value is your top concern, Medterra is the better choice. Its prices are about 10-30% cheaper (depending on the specific product) than CBDistillery.

On top of that, Medterra’s full-spectrum and ultra broad-spectrum oils and capsules feature high minor cannabinoid levels that make them superior to similar offerings from CBDistillery.
