Overall Rating: 4.3/5

Products 4.5/5
Medterra has an impressive variety of products with different formulas and the ones I tested were fairly potent (minus the sleep gummies).
Price & Value 4/5
Medterra’s prices are below average, especially when you consider third-party certifications, additional active ingredients, and high minor cannabinoid levels.
Hemp Quality 4/5
The company’s products are made from hemp grown in Kentucky, one of the best states for hemp cultivation. But it’s lacking USDA certification and additional info.
Third-Party Testing 4.5/5
Medterra provides extensive potency & purity test results that prove its products are safe and accurate. The only weakness is that some tests are older than a year.
Customer Service & Reputation 4.5/5
Medterra is a well-known brand with thousands of satisfied customer reviews. But there are some customer service complaints on its BBB page.

Medterra Overview

Medterra is a popular CBD vendor founded in 2017 in Irvine, California. Its products are sold online as well as in thousands of pharmacies, grocery stores, and other shops across the US.

The company offers all three types of CBD extract and has many products designed for specific needs like sleep, recovery, and focus. They’re derived from hemp cultivated in Kentucky and comprehensively tested by reputable third-party labs, with the test results available online.

What I like most about Medterra is its minor cannabinoid-rich broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD oil and capsules, which are guaranteed to have a high ratio (5-10:1) of CBD to minor cannabinoids.

CBD Glossary

  • Hemp: cannabis variety with high CBD and low THC levels (no more than 0.3%).
  • Terpenes: aromatic plant compounds with various beneficial properties (1).
  • Minor cannabinoids: CBN, CBG, CBC, and other beneficial cannabinoids found in smaller amounts in hemp. They may work in synergy with CBD.
  • Full-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract containing multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This form of CBD is about four times more potent than pure CBD (2).
  • Broad-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract similar to full-spectrum CBD, but with THC removed (may contain trace amounts).
  • CBD isolate: pure CBD without any other hemp compounds.

Medterra Product Lineup

Medterra sells CBD oils, capsules, gummies, topicals, and pet products in all three CBD formulas: isolate, broad-spectrum, and full-spectrum. Many products also contain additional active ingredients like herbs.

For my review, I tested the 2000 mg citrus-flavored ultra broad-spectrum CBD oil, ultra broad-spectrum capsules, good morning capsules, and fast asleep gummies.

Medterra products I received and tested for my unbiased review.

Medterra’s oils come in all three types of CBD and five varieties:

  • True full-spectrum CBD oil rich in minor cannabinoids (~20%)
  • Ultra broad-spectrum CBD oil rich in minor cannabinoids (~10%)
  • Pure CBD isolate oil
  • Full-spectrum CBD+CBG oil
  • Immune boost CBD oil with immunity ingredients vitamin C, elderberry, ginger root, and reishi mushroom

I’m a fan of the variety. Third-party tests also confirm the high levels of minor cannabinoids in the full and broad-spectrum tinctures, making these one of the better CBD oils on the market.

My experience: I tested out the 2000 mg ultra broad-spectrum tincture, taking a full dropper during the day. The citrus taste was tasty and mild and I felt relaxing and calming effects that lasted for several hours.

CBD Capsules

These capsules come in the same three CBD extract varieties as the oils: isolate, broad-spectrum (1:10 minor cannabinoids), and full-spectrum (1:5 minor cannabinoids).

My experience: I tried out the ultra broad-spectrum capsules, taking 3 capsules during the day. I felt more chill and relaxed 60 minutes later and the effects lasted for several hours.

Functional Capsules

Third-Party TestView report

These capsules come in three varieties designed for specific benefits:

  • Natural pain relief, a CBD-free formula that contains levagen, a patented form of palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), an endocannabinoid-like compound naturally made in our bodies
  • Good night capsules with CBD, melatonin, ashwagandha, zinc, magnesium, and cannabinol (CBN) to support sleep
  • Good morning capsules containing CBD, cannabigerol (CBG), caffeine, and anti-stress, fatigue-fighting adaptogens ashwagandha and bacopa

My experience: Me and my friend Trinny tested out the good morning capsules. We both noticed a boost of energy and an improved mood about 40-60 minutes later. I’m quite sensitive to caffeine but didn’t really feel any jitters that I usually get, probably because of the CBD and ashwagandha offsetting caffeine’s side effects. These capsules are a solid choice if you’re looking for a smooth boost of energy.

CBD Gummies

  • True full-spectrum deep sleep (with added melatonin)
  • Keep calm with 25-50 mg CBD, ashwagandha, and l-theanine
  • Focus gummies with 25 mg CBD, l-theanine, and caffeine-containing guarana
  • Sleep tight gummies with 25-50 mg CBD, melatonin, l-theanine, 5-HTP, and a mix of sleep-supporting herbs

I like the variety, added ingredients, and pricing.

Fast-Acting Gummies

Total CBN/CBG60-150 mg
Cost per mg$0.30-0.75

Medterra says these gummies are made with nanotechnology to make them work faster and better. They come in two formulas:

  • Fast asleep with 2 mg cannabinol (CBN), melatonin, l-theanine, and passionflower
  • Relax now with 5 mg CBG, l-theanine, GABA, and skullcap

I like the formulas but the cannabinoid strengths are a little low.

My experience: I tested the fast asleep gummies, taking two before bed. The taste was pretty good. They did kick in faster than most gummies I’ve tried (about 20 minutes) but the effects were not as strong as I had hoped. They definitely need to up the cannabinoid strength.

This cream contains a special type of honey that may offer skin benefits. There are also other beneficial ingredients, including coconut oil, arnica, and aloe vera. While I like the formula, the amount of CBD is a bit low.

Medterra’s pet tinctures contain pure CBD and come in four strengths and unflavored, beef, and chicken flavors. While I like the variety, I’d like to see Medterra use full or broad-spectrum formulas for greater benefits.

Medterra’s dog chews come in two formulas:

  • Joint support with popular joint ingredients chondroitin, MSM, and glucosamine
  • Calming chews with a host of calming herbs like valerian as well as l-tryptophan

They’re made with natural ingredients and come in bacon and peanut butter flavors.

Price & Value

The easiest way to compare the value of CBD products is to divide the total cost by the amount of CBD. For example, if you have a 1500 mg CBD oil that costs $100, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 100/1500 = 7 cents. The prices also vary depending on the type of product.

With Medterra, you’ll be paying:

  • CBD oil: 3-7 cents per mg of CBD
  • Capsules: 4-7 cents per mg
  • Gummies: 6-10 cents per mg
  • Topicals: 4-6 cents per mg
  • Pet products: 6-10 cents per mg

These prices are cheaper than average, especially since many products contain either high levels of minor cannabinoids or additional active ingredients.

On top of that, Medterra’s products are certified by a leading hemp audit program and you can subscribe to monthly deliveries to get 30% off and free shipping. There’s also a discount program for military people with disabilities. All in all, you’re getting pretty good value with Medterra.

Hemp Source and Production Process

Medterra’s hemp is grown and extracted in Kentucky, which it claims is a better place to source hemp than Colorado because it has a longer growing season and better soil. There’s some truth to this as Kentucky has historically been the greatest hemp producer in the US before cannabis prohibition.

Medterra uses CO2 extraction, the most popular method of extracting CBD and other beneficial compounds from hemp. The company is also certified by the US Hemp Authority, which means it adheres to strict hemp industry quality guidelines, such as not using herbicides.

I’d like to see a bit more detail, like whether Medterra oversees the growing process or not.

Third-Party Testing

Medterra sends its products to be tested by several reputable third-party testing labs, including Austin, Texas-based Sante Laboratories, California’s ACS Laboratory, and Florida’s Green Scientific Labs.

The products are tested for cannabinoid & terpene potency as well as contaminants, which is quite comprehensive. All of the test certificates of analysis (CoAs) are posted on Medterra’s site

Third-Party Test Results

I always look at third-party lab test results to confirm that CBD companies sell safe, accurate, and effective products. Specifically, I check for:

  • CBD content, which should be within 10% of the label (3)
  • The levels of THC and minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN
  • Terpene content (if tested)
  • Whether the CBD type (full, broad-spectrum, or isolate) is accurate
  • Whether there are any contaminants

I took a peek at the latest CoA test reports for most of Medterra’s products to make sure their claims about cannabinoid levels and extract types are correct. All of the tests I looked at showed impressive results, particularly for the full and broad-spectrum products that are claimed to contain 20% and 10% minor cannabinoids, respectively.

I added two CoA screenshots to give a glimpse of Medterra’s product quality and accuracy:

  1. The 3000 mg citrus full-spectrum CBD oil CoA showed 2888 mg of CBD (3.7% less) and 22% minor cannabinoids, which confirms the claims of a 1:5 minor cannabinoid ratio. The test also detected multiple terpenes, which is great for a full-spectrum product.
  2. The 50 mg ultra broad-spectrum CBD capsules CoA showed 55.3-55.6 mg per capsule, which is fairly accurate (10-11% more) as well as some terpenes and 12% minor cannabinoids, which meets the advertised 1:10 ratio.

Altogether, Medterra’s third-party tests are impressive. My only complaint is that some tests are older than a year, which is a bit outdated.

Shipping & Returns

Medterra has free shipping on orders above $75. Medterra also has dedicated websites for the UK and Japan. Unopened products can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a full refund, and first-time customers can also return one used product.

Customer Service & Reputation

Medterra has the look of a professional brand and is undoubtedly one of the most popular CBD companies with over 20,000 5-star reviews.

I also like the fact that there are plenty of negative reviews, confirming that Medterra doesn’t censor them like some other brands. I trust a brand more when some of its products have an average 4-4.5 rating versus a constant 5/5. It’s also nice that Medterra has a medical advisory board consisting of doctors specializing in dermatology, pharmacy, and more.

Still, I did find some complaints about poor customer service and subscription issues on Medterra’s Better Business Bureau page, with an average 1.3/5 rating.

My Verdict: Top-Tier CBD Company But Not Perfect

Medterra is a leading CBD brand and a solid choice for all your CBD needs. I like the wide product variety and am a particularly big fan of the full-spectrum and broad-spectrum formulas rich in minor cannabinoids.

The products I tested for a few weeks were fairly effective (except for the sleep gummies). The prices are also reasonable and the third-party test results are solid.

Having said that, I’d like Medterra to provide up-to-date CoAs as some tests are a bit outdated. It’d also be nice to see more details about the production process, like whether Medterra oversees everything from seed to sale.
