Green Roads Review: It’s All About Minor Cannabinoids (2024)

Florida’s Green Roads is one of the biggest CBD brands in the country. It sells a variety of products that come with detailed third-party test reports. We received and tested its CBD oils and gummies, with the Gold oil being the most impressive. 

Summary

Although Green Roads is a reputable brand, its products are a bit pricey and low in minor cannabinoids. After testing its tinctures and gummies, I would only recommend the Gold CBD oil.

Green Roads Overview

Green Roads was founded in 2013 by two friends: Laura Fuentes, a compound pharmacist, and entrepreneur Arby Barroso. As the story goes, Barroso came to Fuentes looking for help with health issues. They tried CBD and were impressed by its effects, deciding to formulate and sell CBD products. 

Since then, Green Roads has grown into one of the largest CBD companies and boasts tens of thousands of satisfied customer reviews. It was acquired by Canadian cannabis manufacturer Valens Company in 2021. 

Green Roads is one of few brands that can say their products are pharmacist-formulated. That explains why the tinctures have a pleasant taste and use different ingredients than most competitors. 

Green Roads Product Lineup

Green Roads sells CBD oil, gummies, capsules, topicals, chocolate, coffee, and pet products. Most of the products are made with broad-spectrum CBD but there are also full-spectrum and isolate options.

For our review, we tested the full-spectrum CBD oil, gold CBD oil, and two types of gummies. See our thoughts below.

CBD Oil

Full & Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil

Green Roads sells both full and broad-spectrum CBD oils in two strengths and three flavors: original (natural), apple kiwi bliss, and mint breeze. They come with a syringe instead of a regular dropper. We like the unique ingredients used to improve the taste instead of the simple coconut MCT oil used by most brands. However, the minor cannabinoid levels in these are quite low (~3-4%). 

Our experience: Our product reviewer Antonio tried the 25 mg/ml full-spectrum oil, which tasted slightly hempy but sweet. He felt calm and relaxed within 45 minutes of taking 100 mg but said the syringe delivery method was inconvenient. 

Full-Spectrum Gold CBD Oil

This potent CBD oil boasts an impressive amount of minor cannabinoids: almost 34%, according to third-party tests! That’s the highest level I’ve seen from any full-spectrum CBD oil and is easily the best Green Roads product.

My experience: I took 1 ml (100 mg CBD). This oil had a unique sweet and lemony flavor with a slightly bitter aftertaste. This is a fairly strong tincture, I felt strong relaxation within an hour and fell asleep easier. But I agree with Antonio about the syringe; it adds too much extra work.

Sweet Sleep CBD Oil

As you probably guessed, the sweet sleep oil is designed to help you get a good night’s rest. It contains 22.5 mg CBD, 2.5 mg of the “sleep cannabinoid” cannabinol (CBN), and 2.5 mg melatonin per ml. While I like the idea, the minor cannabinoid levels in this product are low. The potency is also not that high; Green Roads should add a 50 mg/ml strength.

Daily Dose CBD Oil

These daily dose packs provide 2 ml of Green Roads’ CBD oil per packet. They’re available in full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and sweet sleep varieties and apple kiwi or mint breeze flavors.

CBD Gummies

CBD Relax Bears

These simple CBD isolate gummies come in assorted Blue Raspberry, Lemon, Cherry, Green Apple and Orange flavors and a variety of package sizes. 

Our experience: Antonio received the 25 mg gummies, which he said tasted good. He noticed a pleasing effect of relaxation without an hour of taking several gummies. But he wasn’t a fan of the artificial flavors & colors. 

Sleepy Zs Gummies

This is a gummy version of Green Roads’ sweet sleep tincture. Each piece contains 22.5 mg CBD and 2.5 mg CBN, plus 5 mg melatonin. But again, the minor cannabinoid levels are low for a broad-spectrum product.

Our experience: These gummies tasted like hempy blackberry and were Antonio’s favorite Green Roads product. He took two an hour before bed and noticed powerful drowsiness. They helped him fall and stay asleep. He also had vivid dreams and woke up well-rested.

Rise N’ Shine Immune Support Gummies

These vegan 25 mg full-spectrum gummies are infused with vitamins B12, C, D, and elderberry for immune support. But they’re not really a full-spectrum product as advertised — there’s zero THC or other minor cannabinoids on the third-party tests.

CBD Capsules & Softgels

Green Roads has four kinds of 25 mg CBD softgels:

• Regular softgels with pure CBD
• Relax capsules with added calming supplements GABA and 5-HTP
• Full-spectrum softgels (with good minor cannabinoid levels)
• Sweet sleep capsules with added CBN and melatonin

That’s a good amount of variety to meet everyone’s needs.

CBD Topicals

Pain Relief CBD Cream

This broad-spectrum pain relief cream is infused with menthol and other pain-relieving ingredients like methyl salicylate. There’s also a pure CBD muscle & joint relief cream with a slightly different formula.

Relief CBD Roll-On

This muscle & joint aches relief roll-on comes in two varieties:

• Cooling relief, with added menthol for a cool sensation
• Heat relief, with cayenne to add a warming sensation

Personally, I would’ve preferred to have both ingredients in one product for greater relief.

Advanced Pain Relief Roll-On

This roll-on has a high strength designed to help with serious pain. It contains menthol and camphor for pain relief and anti-inflammatory herbs, including black cohosh root, chickweed, and comfrey leaf extract.

CBD Coffee & Chocolate

CBD Chocolate Bar

A local chocolatier makes this vegan, 62% dark chocolate bar in small batches.

Hemp Flower Coffee

This CBD-infused Columbian coffee comes in three flavors: founder’s blend, French vanilla, and hazelnut. The precise amount of CBD varies but is around 1000-1400 mg. There’s also the Focus Boost coffee in single-serve pods infused with Lion’s mane mushroom for nootropic benefits.

CBD for Pets

CBD Pet Drops for Dogs & Cats

This CBD oil comes in three strengths: a low one for small dogs and cats, one for medium-sized dogs, and one for large breeds. 

Although pets need smaller doses of CBD, these strengths are way too low. The weakest CBD oil should contain 250 mg of CBD, the medium should be 500-750 mg, and the strongest should be 1000 mg or more.

Non-CBD Products

Green Roads also offers nootropic products without CBD: lion’s mane mushroom and cordyceps mushroom capsules. Nootropics are substances that enhance brain function.

Price & Value

The easiest way to compare the value of CBD products is to divide the total cost by the amount of CBD. For example, if you have a 1500 mg CBD oil that costs $100, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 100/1500 = $0.07. 

You also have to consider that the prices vary by product type. Here’s the breakdown of Green Roads’ prices:

• CBD oil: 5 to 12 cents per mg of CBD 
• Capsules: 7 cents per mg
• Gummies: 7 to 13 cents per mg
• Topicals: 3 to 7 cents per mg 
• Pet products: 10 to 33 cents per mg

These prices are slightly lower or just about average for the CBD industry. You also get the option to subscribe for free shipping and 20% off (and 50% on every 5th order). Green Roads also has 25-50% discounts for military members & veterans, first responders, and teachers. But overall, the value is fairly average.

Hemp Source and Production Process

Instead of growing its own hemp, Green Roads gets finished hemp extracts from other producers. 

The hemp is sourced from organic American farms, but we don’t know the exact state or growing conditions. It’s extracted with carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the two main CBD extraction methods, and the resulting extract is sent to Green Roads to be tested for contaminants and then formulated into products. 

Third-Party Testing

Green Roads’ products are tested by Kaycha Labs for potency (how much CBD and other cannabinoids there are) and contaminants. Kaycha is a reputable, multi-state cannabis & hemp testing lab. 

You can find the certificates of analysis (CoAs) documents attached to each product page under “Labsheets” and a dedicated page. 

Third-Party Test Results

I always look at third-party lab test results to confirm that CBD companies sell safe, accurate, and effective products. Specifically, I check for:

• The levels of CBD, which should be within 10% of the label (3)
• The levels of minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBC
• The levels of THC
• Whether the CBD type (full, broad-spectrum, or isolate) is accurate
• Whether there are any contaminants

I looked at many Green Roads third-party test documents. The most impressive thing is that all of the products have up-to-date potency and contaminant tests and the tests are easy to find. I added screenshots of two CoAs for closer analysis:

• The 1500 full-spectrum CBD oil CoA shows 1616.5 mg CBD (8% more than advertised), which is great. But it contains only 3% minor cannabinoids, which is low for a full-spectrum tincture (10+% is ideal).
• The sleepy Zs gummies CoA shows about 26 mg of CBD (15% higher) and 3 mg CBN (20% higher), which is a solid result. But there aren’t any other minor cannabinoids, which is a weak result for a broad-spectrum product. 

The major issue, as with almost all of the Green Roads third-party tests I looked at, is low minor cannabinoid levels (below 6%), making them less effective. I expect high-quality, effective broad-spectrum products to contain at least 6% minor cannabinoids and full-spectrum products at least 10%.

Also, the tests for the rise n’ shine gummies didn’t find any cannabinoids aside from CBD (which should be present in a full-spectrum product).

Shipping & Returns

Green Roads ships throughout the United States, with free shipping on orders over $59. It also mentions shipping internationally but doesn’t provide any details. 

As for refunds, unopened items can be returned for a full refund within 30 days of delivery. Green Roads will also pay the return shipping cost if the return is their mistake (e.g. damaged item). 

Customer Service & Reputation

Green Roads is a trusted, leading CBD company. It has over 30,000 customer reviews and participates in and raises funds for local Florida community events. 

Green Roads is also a sponsor of the Arthritis Foundation and supports other philanthropic organizations, such as the American Cancer Society and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. 

The Verdict: Too Much Style Over Substance

Green Roads is a solid brand that’s been around for a while and built up a good reputation. There are many product options without being overwhelming, and the third-party test results are easy to find and read. 

Our main complaint with Green Roads is similar to CBDfx, another popular brand: it focuses too much on style over substance. The packaging looks great and the products taste amazing but aren’t as effective as they should be, probably because of low minor cannabinoid levels.

The only exception to this is the Gold CBD oil, which shows the highest minor cannabinoid levels I’ve seen from any tincture. If you’re going to buy from Green Roads, I recommend going for this oil.
