Oregon’s Plain Jane is one of the most popular hemp flower vendors, known for its low prices and wide range of hemp strains. The company also sells pre-rolls and other CBD and delta-8 THC products. I tested out its hemp joints, CBD oil, and gummies for several weeks but didn’t find them particularly effective.

Summary

Plain Jane is a decent option for cheap CBD hemp flower. But the hemp products I tested had relatively weak effects.

Pros

  • Thousands of positive Trustpilot reviews
  • Impressive variety of hemp flower strains
  • Exceptionally low prices

Cons

  • Basic website with few product details
  • Lacking details about production process
  • Third-party testing needs to be improved

Overall Rating: 3.8/5

Products 3.5/5
Plain Jane has an impressive range of CBD hemp flower, plus standard CBD and delta-8 products. But the products I tried weren’t that potent.
Price & Value 4/5
Plain Jane’s prices are quite low so you’re getting above-average value. But it does come at the cost of quality.
Hemp Quality 4/5
The company’s hemp is sourced from a farm in Ashland Oregon. But it doesn’t provide many details, like how it’s grown or what extraction process is used.
Third-Party Testing 3.5/5
Plain Jane provides third-party test results but one of the labs it works with isn’t that reputable. It’s also lacking contaminant testing for many products and some tests show inaccurate cannabinoid levels.
Customer Service & Reputation 4/5
With over 11,000 positive customer reviews on Trustpilot, Plain Jane has a fairly solid reputation. But it loses points for lack of transparency and a good number of negative online reviews.

Plain Jane Hemp Overview

Plain Jane was founded in 2018 by Lindsey Holthaus (CEO) and Evan Marshall (CTO). Their goal was to make CBD hemp flower more accessible. Since then, it’s grown into one of the most popular hemp flower vendors in the United States and is particularly popular for its affordable prices and a wide variety of hemp strains.

Plain Jane also makes standard CBD oils, gummies, and other products, but they pale in comparison to its hemp flower.

The company is based in Southern Oregon, with its hemp farm operating in the town of Ashland and a manufacturing facility in Medford. Plain Jane is licensed to grow hemp by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

CBD Glossary

  • Hemp: cannabis variety with high CBD and low THC levels (no more than 0.3%).
  • Terpenes: aromatic plant compounds with various beneficial properties (1).
  • Minor cannabinoids: CBN, CBG, CBC, and other beneficial cannabinoids found in smaller amounts in hemp. They may work in synergy with CBD.
  • Full-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract containing multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This form of CBD is about four times more potent than pure CBD (2).
  • Broad-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract similar to full-spectrum CBD, but with THC removed (may contain trace amounts).
  • CBD isolate: pure CBD without any other hemp compounds.

Plain Jane Product Lineup

Plain Jane is best known for offering a huge range of CBD hemp flower and pre-rolls, which are popular thanks to the low prices and wide variety. But it also sells CBD oil, capsules, gummies, topicals, and concentrates, as well as intoxicating delta-8 THC products.

To write this review, I asked Plain Jane to send me their pre-rolled CBD joints, 5000 mg full-spectrum CBD oil, and CBD gummies. You can see my thoughts below.

Plain Jane is best known as a vendor for CBD hemp flower, so you can choose from a whopping 59 hemp strains, including CBG-rich flower and small bud versions. All of these are low in THC (<0.3%).

You can pick from 1 oz (28-gram) as well as dime (1 g) eighth (3.5 g) and quarter (7 g) sizes and some products are available in 14, 56, and 454-gram (1 lb) sizes. There’s also a sampler pack that contains 1 gram each of four different strains.

But some reviews I found mentioned getting dry flower or relatively weak effects.

Aside from standard dried hemp flower, Plain Jane also sells CBD trim and moon rocks. The trim is arguably the cheapest way to get CBD while the moon rocks are more expensive but still affordable.

Plain Jane has a wide variety of pre-rolled hemp joints to choose from, including regular ones, Twax joints, menthol pre-rolls, and blunts. You can also pick from different strains.

My experience: I tried the most popular pre-rolls: a pack of eight CBD kush joints. The joint was fairly easy to light and pleasant to smoke. I did feel relaxing effects but it took quite a few puffs and it wasn’t as strong as other hemp joints I’ve tried.

Plain Jane has a varied assortment of CBD oils. You can choose from standard CBD oil in isolate, broad-spectrum, and full-spectrum varieties, as well as CBG oil, CBN oil, and even a mixed CBG:CBN:CBD tincture in 1000 mg strengths.

The isolate and full-spectrum tinctures also come in a high-potency 5000 mg strength and four flavors: natural, chocolate mint, blood orange, and lemon lime. Third-party tests of the full-spectrum tincture also showed decent minor cannabinoids (~12%) but the levels of CBD appear to be much lower than advertised — only about 3105 mg.

My experience: I tested out the natural flavor 5000 mg full-spectrum CBD oil for a few weeks. While I did feel relaxing effects from 1 ml (167 mg CBD), they weren’t as strong as I expected for such a potent tincture. That makes sense since the third-party tests found only 3105 mg. Another minor thing is that the colored writing on the bottle began coming off quite quickly.

Plain Jane makes simple CBD capsules in full and broad-spectrum (THC-free) versions. Both are made with gelatin so they’re not suitable for vegans. Again, the third-party test results are solid, showing 11% minor cannabinoids.

Plain Jane’s CBD gummies are available in several varieties:

  • Standard 25 mg CBD isolate gummies in assorted flavors, also available as sour worms and peach rings
  • Sleep gummies with 10 mg of pure CBD/5 mg pure CBN and 2.5 mg melatonin
  • Multivitamin gummies with 10 mg CBD plus a mix of vitamins and minerals

I like the variety but would like to see full-spectrum gummies added.

My experience: I tested out the standard 25 mg CBD gummies, taking 10 during the day. I enjoyed the taste, although they did have a bit of a bitter aftertaste. I felt more relaxed for a few hours after taking the gummies.

Plain Jane CBD has 9 topical products for different uses:

  • A simple beeswax 300 mg CBD salve in 3 scents: peppermint, lavender, and lemongrass
  • 500 mg CBD roll-on for cooling relief with menthol, turmeric, and other helpful ingredients
  • 400 mg full-spectrum CBD body butter in mango, rose, and lavender scents
  • 250 mg CBD bath bombs in chill, energizing, and balanced fragrances
  • 250-500 mg CBD bath soak in the same 3 fragrances
  • Silk night cream with 500 mg CBD, 250 mg CBN, and 250 mg CBG
  • 400 mg CBD beard butter
  • 500 mg milk & honey CBD lotion
  • CBD-infused candles in kush, cake, cherry creme brulee, and blue dream scents

While I like the extensive selection, third-party tests for the full-spectrum products show only CBD or low amounts of minor cannabinoids. I’d also like to see added strengths for the salve and roll-on for people who need stronger relief.

Similar to the flower, Plain Jane’s CBD Liquid6 CCELL vape cartridges come in multiple strain options. They’re made with full-spectrum hemp extract and you also have the option of buying them together with a 510-thread battery if you don’t already have your own.

Plain Jane doesn’t list the cartridge size or amount of CBD/cannabinoids, which is rather odd. But the carts look like they’re 0.5 grams and the tests show about 38.5% cannabinoids (~27% of which is CBD).

Plain Jane also sells concentrated forms of CBD and other cannabinoids, including pure CBD, CBG, and CBN isolate, distillate, and CBD kief, crumble, terpsolate, and full-spectrum shatter.

These are a great option if you want to make DIY preparations or vape/dab concentrates directly.

Delta-8 THC

Delta-8 THC is a legal, hemp-derived form of THC with weaker effects than delta-9 THC, the form of THC most of us are familiar with.

Delta-8 Gummies, Gum, & Peppermints

Plain Jane’s delta-8 gummies come in a variety of flavors and forms, including green apple rings, cherry bites, diamond and pyramid gummies, drizzillz, and cannatarts in mixed fruit flavors.

But I’m not a fan of cheap ingredients like corn syrup (instead of tapioca) and artificial flavors. The gummies are also not vegan (contain gelatin).

Plain Jane also sells hemp flower sprayed with delta-8 THC in 1, 3,5, 7, 14, 28, and 56-gram sizes. I recommend against using this type of product because of concerns over its safety.

Delta-8 Pre-Rolls

4/5

Third-Party TestView report

Plain Jane sells the same variety of pre-rolls for delta-8 as it does for CBD, which makes sense since they probably take their regular hemp flower and spray it with delta-8 to make these. This includes regular pre-rolls, filtered ones, twax joints, and blunts.

Again, I’m not a fan of sprayed delta-8 products.

Delta-8 Tincture

3.5/5

This simple tincture contains 1000 mg of pure delta-8 THC. But my concern is that the third-party test shows 2560 mg, which is much, much higher and can lead people to take more than they wanted to.

Price & Value

The easiest way to compare the value of CBD products is to divide the total cost by the amount of CBD. For example, if you have a 1500 mg CBD oil that costs $100, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 100/1500 = 7 cents.

Meanwhile, for hemp flower, the easiest way to compare is by the price per gram. The prices also vary depending on the type of product.

For Plain Jane, the prices are quite low:

  • Hemp flower: $1.3-6 per gram
  • CBD pre-rolls: $3.6-10
  • CBD oil: 1-4 cents per mg of CBD
  • Capsules: 2-5 cents per mg
  • Gummies: 2-12 cents per mg
  • Topicals: 3-6 cents per mg
  • Concentrates: less than 1 to 4 cents per mg
  • Vapes: 3 cents per mg
  • Delta-8 products: 6-23 cents per mg of delta-8 THC

These prices are exceptionally low and you can get further savings by buying the product bundles. But there is one caveat — the quality is not as good as it could be. For example, the CBD oil I tried was not as effective as lower-potency oils from leading brands, and the gummies use cheap ingredients.

Similarly, the hemp joints I tried were not as effective as others I’ve tested, and I found many online reports of people saying their flower was dry and not very potent.

With that in mind, I’d still say you’re getting above-average value with Plain Jane considering the low price.

Hemp Source and Production Process

Plain Jane grows its hemp on a farm in Ashland, Oregon, and manufactures the products nearby in the town of Medford.

Unfortunately, the company doesn’t provide many more details aside from that, such as which extraction method is used to make the CBD oils and other products.

Third-Party Testing

Most of Plain Jane’s independent tests are done by two labs: Kaycha Labs, a reputable, multi-state hemp & cannabis testing lab. Some tests are also done by Marin Analytics, a less-reputable lab that’s been accused of inaccurate/favorable test results.

All products are tested for potency, although most are missing contaminant tests. You can see the latest test reports attached as images on every product page and a dedicated lab certificates page.

Third-Party Test Results

I always look at third-party lab test results to confirm that CBD companies sell safe, accurate, and effective products. Specifically, I check:

  • The CBD content, which should be within 10% of the label (3)
  • The levels of THC and minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN
  • The terpene content (if tested)
  • Whether the CBD type (full, broad-spectrum, or isolate) is accurate
  • Whether there are any contaminants

I looked at the latest test certificates of analysis (CoAs) for Plain Jane’s products. Many tests show some problems, like some products containing inaccurate CBD levels, many products missing contaminant tests, and a delta-8 tincture with much higher levels of delta-8 than advertised.

Here are two CoA screenshots to give you a sense of Plain Jane products:

  1. The 5000 mg full-spectrum CBD oil CoA shows only about 3105 mg of CBD, which is much less (38%) than advertised. But the minor cannabinoid levels are good (~12%).
  2. The small CBD buds CoA shows 20% cannabinoids with a good variety of minor cannabinoids, which is good.

In summary, Plain Jane needs to work on making its CBD products more accurate and add contaminant testing for all products. I’d also prefer to see it work with a more trusted lab than Marin Analytics.

Shipping & Returns

Plain Jane ships throughout the US for free on orders over $40 (except for vape products, since they require a signature due to the 2021 vape shipping restrictions).

You can return unopened products within a week of receiving them, minus the shipping costs. Damaged or defective products can be returned for refunds as well.

Customer Service & Reputation

Plain Jane has a mostly solid reputation. It has over 11,000 customer reviews on the independent review website Trustpilot, with an average rating of 4.7/5, which is very good. Trustpilot reviews are more reliable than the ones you’d find on a CBD brand’s website, so that’s great to see.

Having said that, there are some negative online reviews, especially on Reddit, where some people have talked about receiving dry, odorless flower and other issues like poor packaging. Plain Jane can also do a better job of providing more info about the company, its mission, and the people behind it.

Still, I’d say Plain Jane is a fairly reputable brand that has problems with quality control and consistency, as I’ve also seen many reviews saying the flower products smelled nice and were effective.

The Verdict: Decent Choice For Cheap CBD Hemp Flower

If you’re on a budget and looking to try CBD hemp flower, you won’t find many better options than Plain Jane. There are dozens of hemp strains to choose from, as well as pre-roll options. But there is a good chance that you’ll get dry flower with weak effects, so do keep that in mind.

As for their regular CBD and delta-8 products, I definitely don’t recommend them. They’re likely to have wildly inaccurate levels of cannabinoids and aren’t that impressive. You’re better off going with more reputable brands like Lazarus Naturals

In my experience, the hemp joints I smoked weren’t that potent, although I did feel some relaxing effects. Meanwhile, the CBD oil and gummies I tried were also quite weak for their strength.

In the end, you get what you pay for; Plain Jane’s products are quite cheap so you are losing out on quality.
