California’s long-established CBD vendor Koi specializes in CBD & THC vapes and gummies. We tested out its CBD oil, gummies, and vapes, which were just okay, especially for the price point.

Summary

We do like Koi’s gummies and full-spectrum vapes. But while most products look and taste great, the effects are a bit weak, especially for the price.

Pros

  • Nearly 50,000 positive customer reviews
  • Full-spectrum CBD products
  • Wide product variety
  • Rare CBD vape formulas

Cons

  • Low levels of minor hemp cannabinoids in some products
  • Not the most transparent brand

Overall Rating: 3.9/5

Products 4/5
The products we tested were just ok, although the delta-8 gummies and CBD oil worked well. The product variety is good but the effects and ingredients can be better.
Price & Value 3.5/5
The prices are pretty average, although the THC vapes and some gummies are cheap.
Hemp Quality 4/5
Koi doesn’t tell us a whole lot about its production process, except claiming to use hemp grown in Colorado and Oregon.
Third-Party Testing 4/5
The test results are extensive and easy to find. But some tests are outdated or show weak results, especially for minor cannabinoid content.
Customer Service & Reputation 4/5
Koi is one of the most established and popular CBD vendors. Having said that, it’s not the most transparent out there.

Koi CBD Overview

Koi is a popular CBD vendor founded in 2015 in Los Angeles. It’s best known for vapes and gummies, which come in a wide variety of flavors and formulas.

After starting out selling only CBD, they later expanded into delta-8 THC and other niche products, like THCV gummies. Koi provides full-panel testing for all products and has many minor cannabinoid formulas with CBN, CBG, and various kinds of THC (delta 8, delta 9, THCP).

Koi has nearly 50,000 customer reviews but the brand isn’t the most transparent out there.

CBD Glossary

  • Hemp: cannabis variety with high CBD and low THC levels (no more than 0.3%).
  • Terpenes: aromatic plant compounds with various beneficial effects (1).
  • Minor cannabinoids: CBN, CBG, CBC, and other beneficial cannabinoids found in smaller amounts in hemp. They work in synergy with CBD.
  • Full-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract containing multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This form of CBD is about four times more potent than pure CBD (2).
  • Broad-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract similar to full-spectrum CBD, but with THC removed (may contain trace amounts).
  • CBD isolate: pure CBD without any other hemp compounds.

Koi CBD CBD Product Lineup

Koi sells a full range of CBD products, plus delta-8 THC, delta-9 THC, THCV, and THCa flower and pre-rolls. Most products contain either full-spectrum hemp extract or one pure cannabinoid.

For our unbiased review, Antonio tried out the THC vape, full-spectrum CBD oil, delta-8 gummies, and CBD vape bar.

Koi sells full-spectrum and broad-spectrum (THC-free) CBD oil in several strengths ranging from low to very high. The minor cannabinoid content for the 1000 mg tincture is pretty good, but the stronger tinctures seem to be low in minor cannabinoids.

Antonio’s experience: I tested the 3000 mg natural flavor CBD oil, which was my favorite Koi product. I used one full dropper at a time. The stevia and flavoring gave it a sweet taste that overshadowed the natural hemp flavor I expected. The effects were mild—I noticed some general calmness but nothing significant. I used it at the end of the workday to relax and reduce potential inflammation.

Koi’s popular CBD gummies come in multiple flavors and four formulas:

  • Full-spectrum CBD gummies with 25 mg CBD/5 mg THC in 3 flavors
  • Nighttime broad-spectrum rest gummies with 10 mg CBD/2.5 mg melatonin
  • Anytime balance gummies with 10 mg CBD
  • Complete nighttime rest gummies with THC (5 mg), CBN (10 mg), CBD (25 mg)

While I like the variety, the broad-spectrum gummies only show pure CBD on third-party tests, which is a poor result. That looks more like pure CBD.

Antonio’s experience: I tried the nighttime gummies. I like the short ingredient list and the cherry limeade flavor is good. I took 2 gummies an hour before bed as directed. Sleepiness kicked in after 45 minutes, and I fell asleep within an hour. However, they didn’t keep me asleep—I woke up 3-5 times during the night, which was surprising for a melatonin product. On the plus side, I didn’t feel groggy in the morning.

Koi CBD is a popular vendor for CBD vapes. You can choose from four options:

  • Pure CBD vape bar (250 mg CBD)
  • Three full-spectrum CBD vapes (2 grams): regular full-spectrum, CBD + CBN (indica) for sleep, CBD+CBG (sativa) for daytime use

The CBN and CBG vapes look impressive. It’s unfortunate that Koi didn’t send us one of those to try.

Antonio’s experience: I am not a fan of the CBD vape bar. It has artificial ingredients and you can smell the vape before you even take a puff. It smells and tastes just like a Piña colada, which I’m also not a fan of personally.

The vape was harsh and had me coughing off just one puff. I took 2 more and didn’t use it again because I coughed so much and didn’t really didn’t enjoy the flavor. I didn’t feel any effects, probably because of the low strength.

Koi is a popular vendor for delta-8 and delta-9 THC gummies, including:

  • 25 and 50 mg delta-8 THC gummies in many flavors
  • Dragon blend gummies with 75 mg D8, 10 mg D9, and 0.5 mg THCP
  • Delta-9 THC (10 mg) gummies with 20 mg CBD
  • 25 mg delta-9 THC/25 mg CBD gummies
  • Brownie with 150 mg delta-9/150 mg CBD

The gummies are vegan but do contain some artificial coloring.

Antonio’s experience: I’m not a fan of these gummies. They use artificial food coloring, which I avoid, and plant-derived terpenes instead of hemp extract. The flavor is a decent blue raspberry but has a slight extract aftertaste.

The effects, however, were solid. With 25 mg of Delta 8 THC, I felt a strong body high, especially around the eyes, along with dry mouth, red eyes, and increased hunger. The effects started within 30 minutes, peaked at 1 hour, and lasted about 3 hours.

Koi CBD sells disposable THC vapes in 2 formulas:

  • Delta-8 THC + THCP disposable 2-gram vape in five flavors
  • THCa + THCP + delta-9 THC disposable 5-gram vape  in five flavors

Antonio’s experience: I tested the watermelon skitz flavors of the 5-g vape. Its only ingredients are hemp-derived distillates and terpenes, but while it’s labeled “live resin,” it seems to be distillate made from live resin, which is more processed.

The smell was strong, like watermelon candy, but the vape was harsh, making me cough a lot on the first puff. After a few hits, I felt a THC-like high within 15 minutes—mostly in my mind, with heavy eyelids, red eyes, cottonmouth, and no increased appetite. The high lasted about 2 hours.

These gummies contain 10 mg of tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), a cannabinoid used to boost energy & focus and reduce appetite. They also carry 500 mg of apple cider vinegar (ACV) per piece, another ingredient believed to help with weight loss.

THCa Flower & Pre-Rolls

4.5/5

Potency30-36%
Weight3.5-14 grams
Cost per gram$9.3-11.4
TypeCannabis Flower
Third-Party TestView report

Koi’s THCa flower comes in 12 sativa, indica, and hybrid strains and 3.5 g, 7g, and 14-gram sizes. There are also THCa pre-rolls in packs of 1-50. Despite the name, it’s essentially the same thing as regular cannabis flower.

Price & Value

The easiest way to compare the value of CBD products is to divide the total cost by the amount of CBD. For example, if you have a 1500 mg CBD oil that costs $100, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 100/1500 = $0.07.

You also have to consider that the prices vary by product type.

Here’s a breakdown of Koi CBD CBD’s prices:

  • CBD oil: 4-14 cents per mg of CBD
  • CBD gummies: 3-25 cents per mg
  • CBD topicals: 3-13 cents per mg
  • CBD vapes: 6-14 cents per mg
  • THC gummies: 3-9 cents per mg of THC
  • THC vapes: 1-2 cents per mg of THC
  • THCa flower: $9.3-11.4 per gram

Most of these prices are about average or a bit cheaper. In particular, the full-spectrum CBD gummies and THC vapes are priced very affordably. Koi also has a subscription program for 20% off, and a 25% off assistance program for veterans, first responders, and other qualifying groups.

Overall, Koi offers okay value but you can certainly get a better bang for your buck elsewhere.

Hemp Source and Production Process

Koi claims to use hemp cultivated in Oregon and Colorado, the two most popular hemp industry states. Like most CBD companies, it uses CO2 extraction to create whole-plant hemp extracts which can further be processed into different products.

It would be nice to have more details, like whether Koi grows the hemp itself or (more likely) works with other producers.

Third-Party Testing

Most of Koi’s independent tests are done by Encore Labs, a reputable lab based in California. The tests check cannabinoid levels as well as the presence of all common contaminants.

Meanwhile, the THCa flower is tested by other, less-reputable labs, probably because of the legal concerns around THCa flower. You can see the latest test results on each product page as well as the dedicated lab results page.

Third-Party Test Results

I always look at third-party lab test results to confirm that CBD companies sell safe, accurate, and effective products. Specifically, I check:

  • The cannabinoid content, which should be within 10% of the label (3)
  • The levels of THC and minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN
  • The terpene content (if tested)
  • Whether the CBD type (full, broad-spectrum, or isolate) is accurate
  • Whether there are any contaminants

I checked the latest certificates of analysis (CoA) for all of Koi’s products to see how they fare. Most products contain accurate levels of CBD and THC, as well as the correct type of extract.

However, some tests are a little outdated, some full-spectrum products are low in minor cannabinoids, and a few products advertised as broad-spectrum seem to only contain pure CBD.

I added screenshots of two reports to give you an example:

  1. The 3000 mg full-spectrum CBD oil test found 3470 mg of CBD, which is 16% higher than advertised (an okay result) but only 1.4% minor cannabinoids, which is a poor result.
  2. The CBD+CBN vape test found 638 mg of cannabinoids, which is a solid result for a 1-gram vape. It also detected THC and 3 minor cannabinoids with decent levels, which is a good result.

Overall, the extent of testing is good and most test results are alright, but there is room for improvement.

Shipping & Returns

Koi CBD offers free US shipping on orders over $49. You can return unused items within 30 days of receiving them.

Customer Service & Reputation

Koi is an established name in the CBD space and has tens of thousands of reviews on its website. But it’s not the most transparent CBD vendor out there. It doesn’t reveal the identity of the founders or many details about their production process. The generic mission statement also doesn’t inspire much trust.

Our Verdict: Some Decent Products But Too Much Style Over Substance

Koi is an alright CBD brand. It has a wide variety of products and flavors and provides full-panel tests to verify everything is safe and accurate. However, it’s a bit too much style over substance.

Similar to CBDfx, the product packaging and marketing look great, but the actual products aren’t that impressive, especially for the price. The bottom line is you can get better quality products at lower prices elsewhere.

Having said that, Koi is good option for full-spectrum CBD vapes (especially CBG and CBN) and THCV gummies. Also, their delta 8 gummies are worth trying if you’re after strong, delicious flavors.
