California’s FOCL offers a straightforward lineup of CBD products sourced from its New Mexico hemp farm. We tried its full-spectrum tincture and gummies, finding both to be tasty and effective.

Summary

FOCL isn’t the biggest brand out there but it offers a good variety of product strengths and formulas. The products we tried had noticeable effects with a pleasant taste.

FOCL Overview

Ken Lawson, CEO of FOCL, launched the brand in 2019 after suffering for years from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Following his diagnosis, he started to explore the health benefits of herbal medications. 

The cost of the natural products took a toll on his bank account and spurred him to launch FOCL to create a handful of outstanding CBD products.

The company’s product range includes CBD oils, gummies, capsules, and topicals with multiple formulas and strengths. FOCL is based in California and has its own organic hemp farm in New Mexico.

FOCL Product Lineup

FOCL offers CBD drops, gummies, capsules, topicals, and pet tinctures in broad and full-spectrum varieties with multiple strengths, formulas, and flavors.

CBD Tinctures

FOCL has broad-spectrum and full-spectrum tinctures in multiple strengths and an additional sleep formula.

FOCL CBD Drops

FOCL has both full-spectrum and broad-spectrum (THC-free) tinctures in three strengths and 5 flavors: orange cream, mint, cherry, natural, and strawberry lemonade.

We like that the third-party tests show almost 12% minor cannabinoids, which is above our preferred 10% minimum for full-spectrum products. Our only complaint is that these tinctures only show a single terpene on third-party tests.

Our experience: Our product reviewer Antonio tried out the 3000 mg full-spectrum orange cream tincture. He took two full droppers before bed and slept well, feeling drowsy and quickly falling asleep again when he woke up during the night.

FOCL CBD+CBN Sleep Drops

The sleep drops are formulated to enhance and support your sleep, mixing about 33 mg of CBD or CBN. They also contain peppermint and lavender, two herbs that may help with sleep.

This tincture is sweetened with stevia and available in broad and full-spectrum versions.

Gummies

Same as the tinctures, FOCL has both broad-spectrum (without THC) and full-spectrum gummies in many flavors and two formulas: regular and sleep.

CBD Gummies

FOCL’s vegan CBD gummies also come in full and broad-spectrum varieties and five flavors: sour watermelon, tropical punch, mandarin orange, and sour pink lemonade or strawberry (only available for the FOCL x Ali gummies).

Our experience: Antonio tried the full-spectrum sour watermelon gummies. He took 2 gummies twice a day for a few days, finding the effects to be subtle but still noticeably relaxing. He also liked the flavor and the ingredients (except the sugar the gummies are rolled in).

CBD+CBN Sleep Gummies

Designed to aid your nighttime rest, these gummies mix 25 mg CBD with 15 mg CBN, the minor cannabinoid touted for its sleep benefits. They also contain the popular sleep supplements passionflower and l-theanine.

Again, you can either choose broad-spectrum or full-spectrum gummies.

Capsules

FOCL offers two types of multi-ingredient CBD capsules: one formula for daytime and another for sleep.

FOCL Day

FOCL Day is a specialty blend designed to give you a natural boost of energy. It combines energy-boosting adaptogens and other herbal ingredients along with CBD. 

These include the evidence-backed supplements Lion’s Mane, Rhodiola Rosea, L-theanine, Vitamin B6, and Bacopa Monnieri. 

Although we like the formula, we’d like FOCL to do a better job of listing how much CBD is present; the label says “hemp extract” which can be misleading. Also, the CBD amount is rather low.

FOCL Night

FOCL night is designed to promote a restful night’s sleep. The capsules contain CBD and five botanicals: Passion Flower, Ashwagandha, Hops Flower, Griffonia Simplicifolia, and Valerian Root. Again, while the formula is great, we’d like to see higher CBD levels.

FOCL Relief Cream

The FOCL relief cream contains 1000 or 2000 mg CBD in combination with other pain and inflammation-relieving ingredients, such as menthol and camphor.

Pet CBD Oil

FOCL’s CBD oil for dogs and cats comes in low and medium strengths and 3 pet-friendly flavors: peanut butter, wild salmon, and savory chicken. We’d like to see another strength added for large dogs.

Price & Value

The easiest way to compare the value of CBD products is to divide the total cost by the amount of CBD. For example, if you have a 1000 mg CBD oil that costs $100, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 100/1000 = $0.10.

The price per mg of CBD is going to vary between products because of different manufacturing costs. Compared to most CBD brands, FOCL’s prices are considered cheaper or close to average:

• The tinctures cost $0.04–$0.08 per mg of CBD
• The gummies are $0.05-0.08 per mg
• The capsules are $0.08-0.16 per mg
• The cream is $0.03-0.04 per mg
• The pet tincture costs $0.07-0.10 per mg

Hemp Source and Extraction Process

The hemp that goes into FOCL’s CBD products comes from the company’s organic farm in New Mexico, in addition to other growers. That’s great news because companies that grow their hemp have greater control over quality.

Still, we’d like to see more information, such as specific growing techniques and the use of sustainable methods.

FOCL uses a solvent-free CO2 extraction process to pull CBD and other beneficial compounds from hemp plant material.

Third-Party Testing

FOCL uses Kaycha Labs, a reputable lab located in California, for third-party testing. It tests for cannabinoid and terpene potency, and contaminants, including pesticides, heavy metals, microbial, mycotoxin, and residual solvents.

Third-party Test Results

I always look at third-party lab test results to confirm that CBD companies sell safe, accurate, and effective products. Specifically, I check for:

• The levels of CBD, which should be within 10% of the label (3)
• The levels of minor cannabinoids like CBG (quality full-spectrum products should have at least 10%)
• The levels of THC
• Whether the CBD type (full, broad-spectrum, or isolate) is accurate
• Whether there are any contaminants

FOCL’s products contain accurate levels and types of CBD. We added three test reports above, which show that:

• The 3000 mg full-spectrum tincture contains THC and other cannabinoids, with only 5% less CBD than advertised (2842.2 mg)
• The full-spectrum gummies contain multiple cannabinoids with ~24.1 mg of CBD, which is only 4% less than advertised
• The night capsules contain only 6% less CBD

All in all, these are solid third-party test results. Our only complaint is that the tincture tests only show a single terpene; we prefer full-spectrum CBD products to have at least three.

Customer Service & Reputation

Although it’s not the biggest name in the CBD space, FOCL has plenty of positive customer reviews. We also like the CEO’s story and the fact that we can see the faces of all of the people behind the company.

Our Verdict: Straightforward and Effective

FOCL is a solid CBD brand. We like the variety of strengths, formulas, and flavors, offering something to every CBD user without overwhelming you with dozens of products.

We also like the addition of other botanical ingredients, the comprehensive third-party test reports, and the fact that FOCL runs its own hemp farm.

Our only major complaint is that the capsules are low in CBD. We’d also like to see the capsule labels clearly state the CBD strength.
